October is pregnancy and infant loss awareness month.
Did you know that in Canada….
🦋 1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss?
🦋 8 in 1000 babies are stillborn?
🦋 4 in 1000 infants die within their first year of life?
October is an important month to build awareness, engage in dialogue, and end the stigma around pregnancy and infant loss. This is the goal of Helen’s Place.
While this year we may be a bit quieter on this platform during October, we are no less committed to building awareness and raising funds towards our vision of building a community of support for families in the GTA. Lots is happening behind the scenes to bring our vision to life!
Thank you so much for being a part of our community.

To celebrate pregnancy and infant loss awareness month, we’re thrilled to announce that Helen’s Place has made its first large grant! The $10,000 donation, made in Helen’s name, has been directed to the perinatal program at Roger Neilson House – where Katie and Ryan received incredible support and counselling after Helen’s birth, and the inspiration behind the creation of Helen’s Place. We could not be more proud of this first big step for our organization!
Thank you to all of our donors for making this possible.
We continue to raise funds to build the capital required to open our doors to families in the GTA. If you’re interested in learning more about our vision, reading the full press release, or making a donation, please visit us at www.helensplace.ca

Happy 2nd birthday to our sweet angel, Helen!
The past year has been one full of emotional ups and downs, some of which have been the cause of our extended silence on this platform. But today we're back to proudly celebrate our daughter, Helen, born still on September 5, 2019. These beautiful photographs are from her first birthday celebrations and memorial service last year. Every year we will continue to find ways to celebrate her and her short but important existence.
This organization was launched last year as her first birthday present, and we've been incredibly humbled by the outpouring of support since. In our first year we've raised $40,000! Over the coming weeks we will be making our first grant in Helen's name, and as alway, we continue to raise funds to build our vision for Helen's Place to support families experiencing perinatal and infant loss in the GTA.
We could think of no better way to continue to celebrate our beautiful daughter, and keep her legacy alive.
We love you always, our sweet angel.
xoxo

Thank you to everyone in this community who has shared, liked, commented, messaged, and joined in the discussion this month for pregnancy and infant loss awareness month. We are so grateful to each and every one of you.
In just two short months since our launch, we have raised over $30,000 for Helen’s Place!! An incredible number that is the result of all of you. Thank you!
If you haven’t done so, please head to www.helensplace.ca for lots of ways to donate. You can even set up a recurring monthly donation!
For now, our posts won’t be daily, but you will still hear from us as we continue to raise awareness, maintain the dialogue around perinatal and infant loss, and work towards building our vision of a physical Helen’s Place.
Stay tuned for more from us!

Meet Helen’s friend, Kimberly!
We met Kimberly this month right here on Helen’s Place social media. She sent us a message of support in early October, and the conversation just flowed from there.
Kimberly is a social worker at an Ontario hospital, and has spent time with parents in some of their darkest, most tragic moments. She is also a mom, and has experienced her own story of loss.
Thank you Kimberly for being a friend of Helen, and for sharing your story!
If you are a bereaved parent, social worker, support worker, or have a story of perinatal or infant loss you would like to share, please reach out to us via DMs. We would love to have your voice contribute to the continued dialogue as one of Helen’s friends.

While today is the last day of October - pregnancy and infant loss awareness month - we hope it’s not the last day of discussion and dialogue around the topic of perinatal and infant loss. For bereaved parents, their heartache and grief doesn’t end today. Their journey is lifelong. Each parent grieves differently and each family’s journey looks different. But continued dialogue is so important - sharing our stories so that regardless of how you choose to grieve and what path you choose to take, you feel like you are not alone. You feel supported, and understood, and heard.
That’s why we’re so excited to introduce our new series, Helen’s Friends. This series will introduce you to other voices in the grief community, as they share their own stories, thoughts, reflections, and guidance.
If you are a bereaved parent, a support worker, or someone else in the grief community, and would like to share your voice as part of this series, please reach out to me via DMs!
Watch for our second post today to meet our first Helen’s friend, Kimberly Patterson!

As we come to the end of October - pregnancy and infant loss awareness month - we are so grateful for the community we’ve built in this small little corner of the internet. We are grateful for the support, the comments, the shares, and for the personal stories people have been willing to open up and share with us. This is exactly the kind of dialogue we want to foster. So that bereaved parents know they are not alone. So that they have the support they need as they navigate their own lifelong journey of grief, however feels right for them. So that they feel understood, validated, and heard. So that others have the opportunity and the platform to share.
That’s why we’re incredibly excited to announce a new content series that introduces fresh voices to our Helen’s Place community. Stay tuned tomorrow for our first post in this series!
